Rio Tinto Northparkes Mines engaged Sustainable Energy Design to work on the mine’s new training centre. The brief was to create an energy aware facility to showcase the North Parkes Mines’ environmental credentials.
The project revolved around achieving a five-star energy rating for the training centre, a new-build freestanding 1200m2 facility located 27km outside of Parkes. All energy aspects of the building were considered:
- Construction methods including materials and orientation (insulation, natural ventilation and other architectural features)
- Zoned lighting with energy efficient fittings and control systems
- Sophisticated SCADA control systems to minimise energy use in the HVAC system
The work done by SED contributed to the building’s achieving a five-star energy rating. An independent energy consultant verified the work.
